I honestly don't understand what the big deal is! Men and women get married to procreate, or that is what marriage was originally created for. So, why is it SO important for gays to marry? They can't procreate. Do they really need a special piece of paper to commit eternally to each other? I really can't understand why it is SUCH A BIG DEAL!! I say let's abolish marriage all together, then everyone can be happy. 50 - 60% of marriages don't last any more, so why bother? WHAT IS THE BIG DAMN DEAL????

The gay marriage fight is really a battle between two groups of religious denominations - Christian and other in both cases. That battle is being missed by the media, and I believe that the battle threatens democracy in America.
One of the reasons for the Revolution, in which ancestors of mine fought -- was to establish freedom of religion in the new nation. Now, we are throwing that away, because contrary to what those on the Right would like you to think, this is not a battle between "people of faith" and "atheists" or some such -- this is a battle between two groups of people of faith, using the government to establish one sides views -- the EXACT THING that the anti-establishmentarian clause of the Constitution is there to prevent.
Of course no one should "make" those whose faiths oppose gay marriage perform such marriages, and no one ever would. So ministers from the Southern Baptists and Assemblies of God and Ultra-Orthodox Jews and Fundamentalist Muslims should never be asked to perform gay marriages, and certainly not forced to.
On the other hand, why should faith groups that support gay marriage -- such as the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian/Universalist Society, the North American Spiritualist Church, Reform Judaism, and the Correllian Tradition of Wicca -- all recognized Churches and 501c3s be barred from practicing their religious faith, which says it is ok to marry same sex couples?
The first group of faith groups is realistically using the government to prevent the second group of faith groups from practicing what they believe. The founders tried to prevent this, for the stability of the country. It doesn't matter that everyone "thinks" they are right and others are wrong -- it matters that we are plural as a society and the government should recognize everyone's ceremonies the same -- which means that gay marriages committed by churches and faith groups that believe in gay marriages, should be honored by the government regardless of what groups that don't like it say.
Everyone's beliefs can be honored, thus preserving the values that my 12 times removed Great Grandfather died for -- but not if we allow one side to legislate away the rights of the other side.
And that's what I think.
Regards,
Reynolds Jones

I honestly think it is a beautiful, fair thing for gays and lesbians to have. Women fall in love with each other and men fall in love with men just as heterosexual couples fall in love. It's TRUE. It's also true that most gays are BORN gay and I think there's no reason to keep marriage restricted to a male and a female. It's about LOVE. It is not about having children, god or anything but true love and equality. It won't "ruin" marriage - frankly, I think the heterosexuals have ruined it already with their cheating, divorce rates, threesomes, abuse, fatherless children.... I think the straight people are scared to see how well gay couples are in a marriage and the loving homes we'll make! lol If it's not such a big deal to you, then just let us have it. Remember that just because you disapprove of something doesn't mean others don't have a right to it.

I disagree with some people on this question. If you view this purely as a government issue, then yes, Gay marriage is fine and it is wrong for the government to stop gays from marrying.
But from a religious stand point, it is a pointless argument because it is impossible from two men or two woman to be married. Marriage is (from a religious view point) a vow made in front of and acknowledged by God. And God does not acknowledge gay marriages. He showed the guidelines for marriage we he officiated the first marriage, Adam and Eve. God said "a man will leave his parents and stick to his wife."

I am not a gay basher, but, I did vote NO in my state. After being on the Internet I have learned realized that there are a lot of gays and when I posted my questions I also found out gays want special treatment and rights.

32 yr old straight atheist here
doesn't bother me at all - legalize it
why should heterosexuals be the only miserable ones.
besides with a 50 percent divorce rate, and drive thru wedding chapels in Vegas, the sanctity of marriage argument is thrown down the drain.

I think it's a little weird for two of the same sex to get married but if you're in love go for it. I think it's hott for two boys to make out and stuff but getting married...wow. But um whatever you want to do. I think you should be able to do it. Espeically if ur in love with that person. I'm striaght but I think gays deserve to be with the one they love no matter what people say or think.

I personally see nothing wrong with it, why should anyone want to stand in the way of two people vowing their love for one another in a legalized commitment.
