The physical mechanism is unknown, but possibilities that have been suggested include: cavitation within the joint – small cavities of partial vacuum form in the fluid then rapidly collapse, producing a sharp sound (hypothesis in a medical journal) the sudden stretching of ligaments (hypothesis by one reader of that journal) release of gas from the joints being adjusted (this applies to the popping that can occur in any joint such as during chiropractic manipulation) adhesions being broken, which simply means that as two cartilage surfaces are pressed together, they form adhesions, and when the joints are separated this makes the popping or cracking sound. There's weak evidence for some damage to the joints; there's a reasonable, but speculative, model for the mechanism. There is hard evidence that the effect is not inevitable. I would conclude, personally, that it's quite likely that cracking your knuckles could lead to some unpleasantness down the road; and since there's little reason to continue an annoying and asocial habit, I'd suggest quitting. But since your loved ones have probably already suggested this many a time, it's unlikely you'll take my word for it.

We probably crack our knuckles everyday without knowing, But all I know is that it's built up pressure in your hands that needs to be realeased. My grandfather is 68 or something and he cracked his kuckles all the time but all he has as a result of cracking his knuckles are big hands and knuckles

It feels good because when you crack your knuckles you are releasing fluid pressure from the joints in your fingers. It has never been medically proven that it is bad for you. I have heard people say it will give you arthritis, but i saw an article in a mag. that said its actually good for your joints because it relieves pressure.
