i`ve written poems based on past experiences, also on how i felt at that moment, when my feelings are very strong about something, i believe any artist in any genre, live short lives, do to the experimentation and open mindedness to try and experience new things and go to the limits to understand what they`re feeling and to be able to express, that in an artistic way.

Poet's need to live long enough lives to have something interesting to write about so I don't know what's in your professor's mind. lol. Anywho. I have written a poem, and it's called the Power of Speech. It's about the impact your words have on people. In fact, I entered a contest and won 300 bucks off of it. Lol. ha ha. Ok, now I'm just showing off!

To motivate you:

Go to a calm place like the lake, the woods, or the beach. Just sit, think and admire what is around you. Then, work on it, and go crazy! My poem was 12 lines long when I thought I finished, but it was 40 lines long when I finished adding th flesh to the bone. Good Luck!

I do write poetry. I usually write about what I'm feeling at the time or get inspiration from things that are happening in the world and my own life. I don't knwo if poets live the "shortest" lives. I've certainly heard of many poets that have died young, but that doesn't mean that all of them do. I suppose that the ones that did simply had a hard life, and that's where they got their inspiration from, thus quite a few of the ones that died young had drug or alcohol problems. I'm not one of them, though I will admit to being pretty weird compared to most people.

li'l mama how ignorant are you?? Or more to the point, how OLD are you?

I write poetry mainly under the influence of drugs and that's my personal style, and it's the type of poetry I like to read.
Then there are other types of poets who write really deep and meaningful poems (stuff that I cant always follow) that show real intelligence.

I think the best type of poetry is simple and something you've experienced and 100% believe. I was watching a poetry class full of youths in America, the class was predominantly African American and the way they expressed themselves was amazing.

In school we read poetry from 40, 50 yrs ago and it was a little harder to follow because it wasn't quite so modern.. but the twist on words has such expression.

I think it's a good way to vent your emotions. And doesn't have to be 'boring' like a lot of people assume it is that don't understand. I'm sick of the stereotype of it being for white, smart people. It's not like that at all.

Hmmm.I've written many and have been very suicidal quite a few times.I smoke and was a heavy drinker for a while, and when I was working at a certain place a few years ago,at least one pot of coffee was nothing for me.I guess I can believe that because we can be alternately passionate and gloomy, which means we do so many things in excess.I'll have to remember that.I can blame it all on being a poet.

I would say that most artists live short lives. I mean, most people who are creative are emotionally motivated. I've noticed that quite a few poets have led difficult lives (either by choice or otherwise), so there might be something to what your prof said.

I don't know about your professor but I have been writing poetry for over 40 years and I am still going strong. What does he consider a short lifespan anything less than 100 years?

No. There are plenty of old poets. Not every poet is a Sylvia Plath or Richard Brautigan.
