Look in Roget's Thesaurus..under "walker"#268 p.70 copyright 1947. Grosset and Dunlap, Inc.
I found : Traveller, voyager, wayfarer, itinerant, passenger. tourist, excursionist, globe-trotter, explorer, adventurer, mountainerr, peregrinator, wanderer, rover, straggler, rambler, bird-of-passage, gad-about, vagrant, scatterling, landloper, wastrel, stray, loafer, etc. and pilgrim, peripatetic, itinerant, pedestrian, somnabulist, noctambulist, emigrant, fugitive. etc.
Now try to think of some similar verbs for moving along in one fashion or another on your own. Make them active/descriptive of the manner of walking in some way, then check dictionary or thesaurus to see if they are real words.
Try: ambled-ambling, voyaged-voyaging, rambled-rambling, (etc)strolled. loped, inched, slinked, creeped, crawled, hied, perambulate, dashed, tromped, tramped, slithered, hopped, moved. traversed-traversing, conducted, promenaded, danced, strolled, kept pace, made one's way, neared, tripped along, dashed, trotted, etc.
Football jargon: Matriculated down the field.
Hope this helps. Good luck
Carole

According to Roget's College Thesaurus of 1978 (I'm in college, got a OLD cheap edition) suitable synonyms for walk/walking include the following:ramble, stroll, promenade, saunter, travel, march, parade, tramp, hike, tread, pace, step.
When in doubt about words, check out www.HyperDictionary.com You can look up a word and it will find its literal, scientific, historical, etc. meaning and a list of antonyms and synonyms. Its great, and its free!
