If you've never worked in the industry then a degree is a must. I would recommend Java out of those you've listed, if you want to do complex web programming. If you want to do embedded apps and networking and windows programming I recommend C++ or C#. Personally I see Java and C# as the two top languages out there that command the biggest bucks. There are more Java jobs, but there are more Java people and the rate is lower. If you go with C# there is a shortage right now and they get higher rates.

Software programming does not require a diploma. In my many years of experience in the software development I have met many people who transferred professions. It takes learning and experience like any other profession.
I would recommend however having a strong background in mathematics, especially algebra.

With Diploma, its going to be difficult. You can go for an part time BCA and MCA cource. If you got the job without doing these degrees, the nits great. You dont require these degress then. As henceforward your work experience will be considered and not your degrees.
