What's the importance of evolutionary dev in prokaryotic cells to enable existence of multicellular organisms

All multicellular organisms are eukaryotes, and need their mitochondria (and chloroplasts, in some cases) to live. Mitochondria and chloroplasts used to be free-living prokaryotes.
