They are just two different brands. The important thing is their processing speed which is measured now in Gigahertz (millions of signals emitted per second). A good speed for a 2-core CPU in a laptop is between 1.6 to 2.3 GHz and for a desktop above 3.0 GHz.

In terms of market, Intel is easier to be found in most of the computers. The main reason is that even though AMD offers good quality products, they can't produce that many CPUs per year as Intel can. It's a quantity problem.

Note: So far, Mac uses Intel processors.

For your purposes I would recommend an Intel-based notebook. Typically mobile power usage is more efficient under Intel. Both companies make outstanding processors, but Intel has rightfully been the leader for mobile processors for quite some time.

In terms of performance, look for Pentium M, Core, or Core 2-based notebooks. Celeron M and Pentium 4 M will be noticably slower, and the P4s are horrible about sucking battery life.

AMD Turion processors are decent as well.
