One of my closest friends has just come to terms with the fact that he's gay. He came out to his parents, and his dad has not spoken with him since. Now my friend wants to kill himself (he almost attempted it). I don't want to lose him, but i don't know what to say or do...HELP!!!

If you are being honest, you need to go to the police and have a mental inquest warrant issued. This will place your friend in a hospital for observation and allow you to tell his dad what a poor excuse for a parent he is.

If you need to, if he says something or you know he's trying it very soon, call the police. Otherwise, encourage him to get whatever help is available to him: if that means school guidance counselors (though I know mine were pretty inept), or the college health center, make an appointment with a psychologist, or walk into the emergency room if that's what it takes. If you know anyone else in your life who's gay who's maybe more comfortable with it, who's happier in life, maybe someone a little older, they might be good for him to be able to talk to. Failing that, the most you can do is listen and be there for him.

I will say, having been somewhere similar: whatever happens is not your fault. There are some things you can do to try to help him, but it's his life and his decisions.

First of all, your friend needs professional help. Try to get him into counseling, or let him call a suicide hotline. Second, try to cheer him up. Offer words of encouragement and everything else that comes with it. You can also try to talk to his parents about this. I'm sure his father would not want for his son to commit suicide. Lastly, don't leave your friend alone. Someone should be with him at all times. For it is when one is alone that he or she feels so isolated from the world that suicide would seem an attractive option. Best of luck to you and your friend.

If you call the police or a psychiatric facility, you will need to tell them that your friend has verbalized an intention to kill himself and how he plans to do it. Say those things IF you believe him to be in danger and he will be hospitalized for 72 hours of observation and counseling. It may be what he needs to get the help he needs to re-evaluate life.

its not often that people who talk about suicide or make false attempts actually do it ...real suicides they just do it and leave you wondering why ,your friend is needing some help contact a teen gay crisis center and keep talking to him its the best thing you can do.

I run a gender education community.. I also happen to be chronically suicidal.. we have a thread called "suicide" with information resources. Please, encourage your friend to visit our community, and your friend can always message me directly.

my myspace is www.myspace.com/my_other_me
and the community is here and this specific thread deals with resources and a suicide hotline:
http://forum.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=messageboard.viewThread&entryID=16098121&categoryID=0&IsSticky=1&groupID=102510413&Mytoken=81739926-7298-444A-AC210FE12BB9469517631868

my first suicide attempt was after I came out to myself as queer..
i'm very lucky to be alive today. Look, don't listen to those selfish people who say that if someone is suicidal for a long time, that they only want attention. misery doesn't always appear and dissapear forever. sometimes it lingers... ya know? my thoughts are with you both..

Having lost someone to suicide. I would suggest that you spend alot of time with him, try to keep his mind focused on the good things in life and possibly see if you can convince him to see someone for some help.
