As the history goes, when INDIRA PRIYADARSHINI wanted to marry FEROZ and Nehruji was not agreeing for her marraige with him. Then, Gandhiji inteferred and adopted Feroz as his son and then he got married to Indira. And that is how she got her surname Gandhi.

According to my finding Feroze father Nawab Khan was a grocer for the Nehru family. The frequent visits put Feroze in contact with the Indira while Nehru was busy with his politics.Nehru did not like this relation so Mahatma adopt Feroze Nawab Khan Ghandy. But at this point there is no specific adoption document available to support. I doubt Mahatma will do such adoption and did not tell anyone or did behind the closed door. Or some time Mahatma Gandhi may have made such mistake under the influence of Nehru family pressure and obligations. But I still doubt and think this was the Nehru family scandal. It is hard to erase all the documentation trail... .

Indira Gandhi was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's daughter. She married Mr. Feroze Gandhi and hence got the surname Gandhi after marriage. For some more information about her, you can refer to:
