...you should call your dealership. They'll replace your key, although it might cost you quite a bit due to the fancy electronic bits inside of them these days. A locksmith might be able to get you inside of the car, but they probably won't be able to make it start.
I've seen a few questions like this on Yahoo! Answers that made me suspicious someone was just trying to figure out how to break into a specific model of car.

These folks (I gave them all a thumbs up) are right about the key being electronically programmed. Although I drive a MINI, it's keying design is pure BMW. A new one will cost you about $150 and comes straight from the factory. Yes, you have to prove ownership. Yes, it will take you a while to get it.
You can only drive 3 miles on a valet key. A locksmith can get you nowhere. A thin strip of metal won't help you -- you need an authentic BMW key.
Why do you think BMWs have such great insurance? They can't be stolen unless you leave the keys in the ignition ... great anti-theft, right? The downside is that if you lose your keys, you pay.

DO NOT let a locksmith work on your car. The new BMWs have a very sophisticated locking system and unlocking by hand will ruin the programming on the computers and they will all have to be reprogrammed. Just call up your dealer and provide them with the information necessary. they will get you the key but it will cost alot. be care full with they keys because the BMW company will only allow you to get (i think) 9 keys including the originals before they force you replace the entire locking system on you car. that will cost around 5 to 6 grand.

A lock smith can get you in the car but you will have to get a key from BMW to start the car. The anti-theft device needs a key coded to that car to start. You can only order 4 or 5 keys before you have to replace the computer so try and keep better track of your keys or its going to cost you.

Call BMW and get a replacement. You'll probably need the VIN and proof of ownership. They can send you a new key but it'll cost ya.

BMW keys are laser-cut. You will probably have to call the dealership where you bought your car and give them the VIN number or something.

Contact your local dealer and read him the VIN number of your car. They'll have one made up and ready for you in a couple of days, and if you let him know that it's an emergency, you can wait and pick it up.
