OMG Don't do it pregnant ladies!
I got impatient with my first and tried it....
I could barely keep it down...it is the most foul tasting stuff EVER!!
I had the worst intestinal cramping with explosive diarrhea. It was horrible!
I did not go into labor. I was glad I didn't!! Could you imagine laboring and pushing with horrible diarrhea?
It is thought that the intestinal cramping will cause your uterus to start contracting ad subsequently start labor. I think it is crazy!

I would suppose that it like anything can be harmful, old folk tales say that castor oil helps with labor. Honestly I think the only thing that it really will do, is keep someone in the bathroom once it catches up with you! When its time, its time, mother nature or the help of doctors will induce labor!

About 40 years ago I started a premonitory labour with my daughter Maryrose, my mother arrived with the castor oil and orange juice,it was horrible. And yup I got a good run for the money. But it didn't do much else. So it didn't do any harm either. The actual labour began the next afternoon. And was about 8 hours. So they say, average. With only 2-3 hours of hard labour.
I'd ask the doctor.

Good god almighty that sh*t is NASTY. I took it when I was 2 weeks overdue and just gave myself a free ticket to the bathroom for about 24 hours. Not to mention burping up that awful flavor for 2 days afterwards.
Didn't put me into labor, though many women swear by it. If I was in that situation again, I'd either wait it out or induce (which has it's own risky side effects).

I took castor oil when i was 39 weeks, and it made me contract. I was on the toilet about half the time that it was in my system, but the intestinal cramping, i guess, made my uterus irritated. My doctor said at 39 weeks, i was good to try it, so of course, i did. she said it would make me dehydrated and irritate your uterus, and it did. when i went in to labor/delivery, my contractions were 2-3 minutes apart on the monitor. but i was only 3 cm dilated, so they sent me home in a whole lot of pain, with no advise or concern. DAMN MILITARY HOSPITALS!!!

I don't think it is, check with a doctor first.
Avoid If...
Don't take Castor Oil if you have nausea, vomiting, an intestinal blockage, appendicitis, severe inflammatory intestinal disease, or any abdominal pain of unknown origin. Not recommended for pregnant and nursing women and children under 12.

DONT DO IT!!! it is not proven healthy
number one it is a fish oil and what it does is make you poop...lol and pooping makes your tummy contract and so it is said it causes labour. but I'm not talking just any pooping i mean non stop until you have nothing left in you pooping it is not fun. my fiancees mother used it for 3 children and it started labour but it was not pretty and they say that starting labour unmonitored prematurely can harm a baby. I went 10 days over due with my daughter and its really not as bad as i thought it was...so wait, the baby will come when ever it is ready :)

Yes it is fairly safe and it is said to help induce labor.
Castor Oil-This is a quite unpleasant way to cause strong uterine contractions. This in turn, causing you to go into labor. Although this worked for me with my second daughter, it is an unpleasant way to go into labor.
Here's are two recipes for this:
1. 2 ounces of caster oil in a large glass of orange juice. Stir well, gulp down immediately!!
2. 2 ounces of castor oil-strait! Do not drink anything afterwards. Do have a mint of some sort. Trust me, you'll want a mint!
Here is a great site that explains it's use and it's safety.
