i am very upset to see some of these answers.
First of all, the optical nerves will not be damaged, as they are receptors. Secondly, whether it is contact lenses of glasses, the purpose of corrective lenses is to refocus light rays so they do converge at that point on the retina. There is NO damage in the optical nerves.
Contact lenses could possibly damage the cornea, yes, if you do not clean them or leave them there for too long. But no matter what your age is (unless you're 4 or sth), if you take good care of your eyes and contacts you will be fine.
I have worn contacts since I was 12. I am 22 now. 10 years of wearing contacts. I have tried many brands and types. My brother also started at 12 (he's 19 now), and he has not had any problems ever either.
For your child, I would recommend dailies. You throw them away right before going to bed, and it is sooo easy. When I first started wearing contacts, dailies were not available, I had weekly ones. I would forget to take them off sometimes, or I would be falling asleep and be too tired to get up and take them off. This happens a lot when you're a teen! :)
Talk to a licensed optometrist for more info. But from someone with 10 years of experience... contact lenses are one of the best inventions.... :)

I would wait until there at least in 7th grade. I got mine for Christmas in 7th grade when I was 12. Plus the longer you wear them the more your eyes get used to them and they worsen your vision. And you should make your child pay for the solution cause that teaches some responsibililty. Like I now know that I need around 10 dollars a month for Solution and not to waste it on junk.

If you thinks she is responsible enough, yes. I started at 10 and all my friends started at 8. Though it may seem young, 11 is a really a good age -- especially for those that are responsible.

Does your 11 year old want contacts? That seems young to me. I have an 11 year old and could not imagine him taking proper care of his contacts and eyes at this age...I would wait until at least junior high(like 13). Of course it is totally up to you, you know your child best! Good luck.

You shouldn't let her wear contacts. Not yet though. Because sometimes her eyes could hurt even if she knows how to properly install her contacts. If she is wearing glasses right now, you should let her stay it like that, but sometimes her glasses could be pretty uncomfortable for her so you should maybe give her contacts. Buys some contacts for just one little test on each eye. Don't let her wear it yet, but just give her like a test run for only one day just to see if it is doing good for her. You can give her contacts, but I recommend that you shouldn't.

Yes, if she is responsible...then why not? My little sister got them when she was 12 and she's now 17...absolutely loves them and wouldn't go back to glasses for anything.

i think you should just simply say yes, think about it no expense glasses to break and they are very easy to use and no teasing for him/her eg: 4 eyes, nerd geek, etc
so i say go with the contacts:)
