My daughter is renting a house in Umina NSW and has no working smoke alarms. She has been in the house since January this year. My grand-daughter lives with her and the real estat agent said they would fix them but still nothing has been done. I know there are penalties so can somebody please tell me what they are and I will ring them myself as this is getting beyond a joke.
Thankyou all.

By law there should be 2 in a house ring the tenants authority.

Yes, yes it can. I know because it's just happened to me 10 mins ago! My fire alarm went off so I jumped up and began running around looking for smoke but found nothing other than a freshly produced pile of dog poo right under the alarm. I have a large Malamute with a dickie tummy and we often have problems with her smelly behind but this has taken it to another level lol

Call the local fire department (use the non-emergency number!)
They are usually the ones who enforce fire safety codes, so they can tell your daughter and her landlord what the law is.
And as others have suggested you can buy your own smoke alarms.

i believe when renting it is the owner responsibility to provide a working fire alarm , however , for the cost and safety of your daughter , get her one and a fire ext. for other kitchen just in case of a stove fire . most places don't do a very good job in cleaning the stove and left over grease can cause a fire ... or keep salt, flour things of that nature near by to douse out a fire in the event one starts ....

Huh! Its simple. Instead of waiting for real estate agent, give her five or ten dollars and let her buy one herself! What are yiu waiting for, a fire? Tell her to save the receipt and give it to the real estate man when he comes to collect the rent. Whatever it costs, deduct it.If the agent doesn't like it, too bad. Let him take her to court for that measely five or ten dollars. It'll cost him more than five or ten dollars just to file the complaint, much less have it served.

tell her to go to walmart and get an 8 dollar smoke alarm. If she is really concerned about her safety, she would have done this long ago.
