We know Superman, Batman, Spiderman fight evil. Which others could a Christian identify with? Do Christians have their own superheroes we don't know about? If they do, what powers would they possess?

That is an interesting question Zorro. The Cross and the Switchblade was made in to a comic, and David Wilkinson had the power to love somebody who had threatened to cut him up in to 1000 peices. David told him every peice would say I love you. That is pretty amazing. Christians powers aren't like superman, batman or spiderman, those are physical things our source of power is God, who gives us the power to love those who threaten us.
Forgive those who hurt us.
It is Spiritual Power to fight our fight which is a Spiritual One not a physical one. Eph 6:12
That was something that the people of Jesus time didn't get they were expecting some one to over throw the Romans but he didn't he showed love and mercy.
Other Superheros I have seen in comics -
Hudson Taylor - he went to China and lived in the same poverty as they did.
David Livingston against all odds went to Africa - I think he even lost his wife
The writer (so sorry I don't know his name) of "It is Well With My Soul" he lost his family but still had faith in God.
There are heaps, none of them have extraordinary physical power but there belief in God was astounding. Their love for others, their compassion.

There have been many true stories of christians made into Christain comics.
The Cross and the Switchblade, God's Smuggler, In the presence of my enemies.
During the 70's there was an entire line of christian comics including Archie Andrews and the gang facing problems of teen drugs, insecurities and christian dating.
While many superheros fight evil there are few that actually refer to a faith. One of the most prominate in the comics was Nightcrawler from the Xmen. It was also portrayed in X2 the movie as he is Catholic. Electra was portrayed as Greek Orthodox. Hellboy is portrayed as Catholic, as well as most of the Spanish superheros like the White Tiger, Jaguar and El Jefe

Many others like the Punisher were former priests or in training.

I'd like to mention to Abbesange, the hymn writer he was thinking of is Horatio Spofford. He wrote the hymn "It is Well withMy soul" after his wife and daughter had drowned.

Don't overlook the Biblical characters themselves: Samson (in the Book of Judges) was the strongest human being ever recorded, and his strength came from a supernatural source, just as you might think of Captain Marvel (Shazam) having supernatural powers. Elijah was enabled to run faster than King Ahab's chariot (I Kings). Phillip flew away faster than the Ethiopian eunuch's eyes could follow (Acts.) Elisha called down lightning upon his enemies (II KIngs.) The apostles healed the sick, raised the dead, etc. Are those 'super' enough for you...?

Instead of reading comic books about Biblical characters, why not just read the Bible...? It's well worth it. Hardly anybody can consider themseves well-read or classically educated, if they have not read the Bible through at least once.

I have always admired Superboy (I don't think it was only youthful idealism) when he said that the S on his emblem stood for Saving lives, Stopping crime, and giving Super help to whoever needed it.

Or when Superman first met "Willie (Captain Thunder) Fawcett": "It makes me feel good to know that somewhere, one one of the myriad Earths that stretch across Creation, Captain Thunder fights evil and champions the cause of the oppressed and helpless-- for no other reason than because it is right!"

Or Green Lantern's oath. We are familiar with Hal Jordan's oath, and with Alan Scott's oath, but how about : "All that do evil hateth the light, neither cometh unto the light lest they should be reproved; but he that does what is right comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that what he has done had been wrought by God." John 3: 20, 21. Wouldn't that make an awesome oath for a Green Lantern...?

The concept of the knight-- the Christian in arms to deliver the downtrodden and succor the fainting-- is not a new one, but perhaps one we would do well to revive in this, our age of iron.

Christian concepts abound in the superhero world. It is just that some of them are distorted so that they cannot be recognized, and the true source of some of them is not properly identified.

Hve you ever read The Death of Menthor, in the Thunder Agents...? What a great story. John Janus, a double agent who intended to betray the United Nations, repented and became pure and noble, to the point where (even though he was shot six times!) he threw his body into the laser deathtrap to warn the rest of the Thunder Agents, so that they did not suffer the same fate. His heroic self-sacrifice saved their lives.

We are all called to self-sacrifice. We may not get the opportunity to lay down our lives saving others, but we have to delay gratification, resist temptation, put aside childish selfishness, refuse to indulge in self-pity, bear up patiently with the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, and all the rest of it.

And it is all so that someday, when we stand before Jesus, we wil hear Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" That's what I'm looking forward to. Jesus Himself is our role model. If it's not too irreverent to say, He's MY Hero!!!!

Actually most comics if you can get past the voilence blood and swearing use many bible refrences. For example the story of superman. jor-el plays the part of god sending his only son to be our savior. Eventually he dies for our sins(i.e. Doomsday) but they brought him back to life. Also looking at the movies there are tons of instances. In Spiderman 2 When he saves the train he is stretched out like on a cross. Superman he falls like he is on the cross.

Daredevil, he is a catholic and his dual identity and the manner in which he acts and his mental anguish is decidedly a catholic conflict.
