I am only guessing when you ask about a positive influence you mean for the good? Well we know war is hell, and both sides lose automatically, lots of fatalities, innocent always are anhilated in some way. So in that sense it is a matter of which side you are on when it comes to the enemy. But in the other sense, did we learn from these mistakes? I do not believe we have dating back to 6000 years of wars in history, one more bloodier than the next. A lot of land grabbing, rape, pillaging, plundering and tyranny, in most cases except for after WW1, WW11, and Vietnam, we still shared the freedom of democracy that our forefathers shed their blood to pass on to us. But that we have conceded so readily for all the comforts that we attain.(Greed, power, lust etc.). If you want to say that after vietnam 100's of children sired from or military men in battle were shipped as refugees to be with their fathers here and be free, that is positive, because many were adopted. But they all had one thing in common they were American/Vietnamese and we provided the way. There is mercy after a war at times. We freed many Nazi soldiers and gave them amnesty in our country and others where they could change their names and start over. But we sent the Jewish refugees from concentration camps a float in the sea to Cyprus and held them in another concentration camp, until they broke free and went back to their roots, like some Afro-Americans have done. But the Jews were given no mercy not even after the War. America would not let them in? WW1 we left them to eat our of Garbages after we beat the Keiser and his mighty men. So then Hitler arose out of the rubble in Austria only to benefit from that devastation by killing and land grabbing. Russia benefitted they built a wall and kept all those countries as a prisoner as slaves to their pathetic system under Stalin.

You could actually write a disseration on this questions and I have to prevent myself from doing just that. Although war is bad in many cases, it can also have positive developements that do occur. Alot of it depends on your perspective to the war. If you are on the winning team there are going to be a lot more positive affects.

I don't even know where to begin. Before I give specific examples to each of your suggestions I will begin by stating that during times of war, technology increases exponentially. And not just technology that can kill. Much of the medical technology that we use today to help trauma victims was first practiced and developed during times of war. Penacillin, which is responsable for saving thousands of life due to its ability to prevent infection, was a product of WWII. This is just one example of medical accomplishments.

If you want specific examples in each war you can contact me. Two of my favorite examples of positive things that come out of war. M&M's candies are a product of WWII. They wanted to get chocolate to the soldiers on the front lines but it would always melt. They invented a thick candy shell that melts in you mouth, but not in your hand. Modern twinkies are another example. Before WWII twinkies were bananas flavored but when bananas were rationed they became vanilla. Also they put the cream on the inside because they were easier to carry that way.

These are two examples of simple things that people invented on the fly. M&M's and twinkies have nothing to do with killing Nazis but are a positive result of war. If you have these two small things, imagine what else was developed.

I think you need to look at each war separately, in order to determine positive effects. The wars you mention are too widely spaced in history to be able to generalise, except perhaps World Wars I and II which were only a generation apart.

You would think we would learn something from such horrendous events wouldn't you ?I can think of many bad things that came from those events but apart from a few medical and scietific advances the only other thing I can think of is the advancement of the cause of women, giving them the chance to get out of the kitchen.
