i own a repair shop,and usually the only reason the light will come on in one is if its low on coolant or it has a bad sending unit on it this happens a lot on some cars ,but if it isn't getting hot then id say you might need to change the sending unit ,and then see if it comes on again,chances are if it don't over heat it just has a bad sending unit on it and that's an easy fix,,good luck with it ,i hope this help,s.

Maybe needs coolant take to a shop and have them to check the coolant level just a little low will turn the light on

Low collant level., Fan not turning on.Thermostat stuck.Leak in system.Water pump. Loose fan belt.
