Because it is human nature and genetics to live according to your income. Your income can double and your ability to manage money will not change. Some people have twice as much on half the income. I am sure you know someone that makes less than you but always seems to have more.

Because the government has to bleed us dry and they can't get blood from a stone. The less someone earns, the less they can afford to part with. People have to have enough to live on. If you earn more, then theoretically you have more to spare and the more the government can take from you.

You pay more taxes.

Also a person who earns a lot of money tends to spend more money and that becomes a habit and they feel entitled so they buy more and they send their kids to private schools. They take very expensive vacations. It becomes a cycle of the more they get the more they have the more they spend.

It's because of those nice things you can now afford (well, at least the down payment for said things) are more then you were paying for the piece of rubbish you had before.
