I know exactly how to get rid of them, but you really need your vet's help. Ivermectin is the way to go, but with an animal that small it's hard to get doseage exact. That's why I'm saying see your vet-- you'll need help, at least the first time around, to know how much to mix. Your vet will probably have you use liquid Ivermectin (aka Ivomec). The paste isn't as easy to measure exactly. The liquid can be diluted with water & squirted into their mouths.

Treat once a week for 3 weeks. You have to repeat because the treatment will kill off suckling adults, not newly hatching eggs. You need to interrupt the life cycle.

It's a good idea to clean the caging each week when you treat. Disinfect and consider spraying down with a flea dip on the cage. Let the insecticide sit for awhile. Rinse WELL before putting rats back in.

Mites are a common problems with pet mice and rats. They can come in on other rodents, wild rodents, infected beddings, etc. I would not blame the pet shop -- it could've had mites in it from the factory, from a warehouse (wild rats), or from storage in the back of the store. You don't know where the bag got the cooties. What you can do is freeze all new bedding in your home freezer at least several days before using it.

Been there, done it. Also have helped others get rid of mites.

I used to have a pet rat in college. He was just like a dog to me...I loved him sooo much. I think you should take your rat to the vet. The knot could be something bad and he/she could help you with the mites. I ended up having to put my rat to sleep. He had cancer. Good luck to you. I hope yours will make it through this with flying colors!

Get "nix" from the drug store and wash her in it also wash out her cage and dishes etc...
Nix is used for head lice in humans but works wonders on mites.
