Near the end of the case, my intuition is telling me he is faulty and I dont want to be forced into some deal

Lawyers could be changed as long as the procedure in the court are observed. Notices to the parties and to court should be properly made.

You can always fire your attorney. And hire another. Or represent yourself.

The question of fees is another issue.
