First of all I would contact your local building department (if applicable) because most jurisdictions require that you obtain a permit for house demolishment to make sure that you have capped any sewer, disconnected water, and electricity is off. From there it's up to you on how you want to tear it down (hand, backhoe, etc) and then most of the time you'll be required to backfill the basement and pack the dirt.

They can condemn the house because it is unsafe, or they can take it through "eminent domain". In any event, there is quite a long process that is gone through before the house is actually destroyed. Unlike Arthur Dent, you won't wake up one morning to find bulldozers in front of your house! But if you have received a notice from the city that your house has been condemned, or is being considered for taking through eminent domain, or is scheduled to be demolished, you need a lawyer and fast. You need a professional on your side who knows what your rights are and how to protect them.

A house that old will have "ship lap" on the outside and inside--it is the first thing to remove. After that removal you can literally get a tractor or large truck and get a long cable to one of the top corners and pull it over! The largest building that I was involved in was pulling over a 20,000 foot old flour warehouse at a railroad terminal site. Three of us build homes out of the old long-leaf pine. My home is 3200 square foot of used framing and I used the ship lap for cladding on the outside and also for the sub-flooring at a 45 degree angle--for the second floor. It survived a tornado spawned during hurricane Rita while across the street the storm demolished a modern day build conventional home.
Remember it is easy to get great used materials and recycle them into a modern home! I finished may home for $25,000 28 years ago and it is worth $300,000 today.

Another step is that you might have to get a permit to do any demolishing. You possibly might be paying taxes on the structure so the permit would be telling them that the structure no longer exists and to stop taxing it.Are there any salvagablility in it--copper,bricks,wood(oak,walnut),fixtures,doors,windows?Can it be used as fire department practice? Are you going to rebuild on existing footprint(same location as old house)? Is the old heating system's piping covered with asbestos? And last of all,is the house really beyond repair?

Utilities first. Salvage. Burn. Truck out or bury.
I have a heavy equipment company and would not send rubber tire equipment to this job.
The other suggestions were good. Volunteer fire departments love opportunities like this.
Whatever is left can be trucked out or if code permits, buried.
Trackhoe/excavator with a long boom for loading.

You could start by calling your local fire dept. Sometimes they will do a controlled burn for practice purposes. Or police departments sometimes like to use them for drills to knock down doors and such for training. I worked for a demolition company and we did that quite often before we went to work. The depts. love the opportunity. If you do not opt for that, make sure you check your local building dept. for codes and call a reputable demolition contractor. Also make sure all utilities are terminated before any work is done.
