There is a hissing noise that seems to come from the evaporator area in a 96 Accord. The compressor seems to be engaging but there is no cooling. What kinds of trouble can cause this hissing noise? Any idea of what bulk costs I am looking at ?

There might be a small piece of debris stuck in the inlet side of the evaporator. The hole system must be blown out with nitrogen and recharged. A/C systems are very expensive on a cold day, price I can't give.

Is the fan for your heater running when you turn on the ac ?? The heater fan supplies the air flow across the evaporator. If the system is low on refrigerant the compressor will not engage. The hissing noise you hear is probably the expansion valve.
