Horizontal is Left to Right. The X-Axis on a Graph. The Horizon (Land Meets Sky Line).
Vertical is the Up and Down. The Y-Axis on a Graph. A Tree, Lamp Post.
In most cases Horizontal is East to West, Vertical is North to South.

Hi. Depends on the subject. Radiation (as in radio waves) is related to an antenna. (Vertical being along the axis of the antenna.) If in doubt, horizontal is lined up with the horizon.

Try to remember it this way...
Horizontal is 'laying down' and Vertical is 'standing up'
