I'm only 28. I found a hair with some gray on it and pulled it out, only to see that the gray was a tiny patch (about 1/4 inch long) in the middle of the hair. Meaning that the hair was brown for a long time, then started growing gray, and then returned to growing brown again. Could that have been caused by a period of stress? What's going on?!

It was not "bad lighting." The color was definitely gray.

I was 19 when I started to go gray (I'm 34.) Gray hair is caused by a copper deficiency. People, as they get older, require more copper in their diet. Copper deficiencies not only cause hair to grow gray, but the fatty parts of our body grow more relaxed and fall south. You'll notice that ladies with blue hair also have their boobs on their stomachs? Then there's the white-haired gents who's bellies are below their belts?
I take copper supplements and it has slowed the graying process (some of my hairs lost to the colorless world have grown back with some color) and my body fat has been (so far) successfully fighting gravity.

It's a total myth. A friend of mine is a cosmetologist and she explained to me that our bodies eventually stop producing the enzymes and protein necessary to maintain hair color, thus the hair goes gray. Some people start to gray sooner than others, and some people never do....but it has nothing to do with stress.

It's a myth. Grey hair is caused when the pigment of your hair stops being produced. Grey hair is not grey at all but, white and pigmentless. It's a sign of aging and "I'm not getting old it's stress!" sounds a lot better. Some people go grey eariler than others.

It's a myth.
Some people get gray hair earlier than others from genetics.

The all mighty God of this Universe had it written that this is a sign of wisdom. But today this may mean a lot of hard stress-full work.

truth, can't tell you the cientific reason, but I have seen it...
if not sure, look a young president...in just a few months, if he doesn't dye his hair you'll see it full of gray hair.
Next time if it's too many gray hairs, don't pull them out, maybe what people say about getting even more gray hair if you pull it out it's true, yikes! ;)

No, you're not stressed. Well, you might be, but it isn't indicated by gray hair. You might just have been in bad lighting or something.
