The film?

To me it was a visual montage of the human psyche -- from one spectrum to another.

We had those that tortured and killed others senselessly -- no regard for human life.

We discovered one man's determination to escape at all costs so as to reunite with his family.

Finally, we became acquainted with another who personified the meaning of a 'true friend' with his exhaustive efforts to find him.

On a side note: This film is one of my all-time favorites.

If your talking about the movie I always took the story about Dipth Prang (that was the Cambodian Reporter's name, right?) to be a vehicle used to take you inside Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge and see really how horrible their reign of terror was. When Dipth Prang is in the camp you see how the little kid goes up the the drawing of a family and erases where they are holding hands, how intellectuals were persecuted, and then finally as he escapes you see the actual killing field.

It showed you how the Khmer Rouge totally ruined Cambodia. Dipth Prang's family went from living an existence that was as normal as can be for a family in a war torn country to living in a squalid apartment in New York.

I think that should be a required watching movie in schools.

"Meaning" alludes to a significent goal. The goal of the Communist regime of Pol Pot was to annihilate as many people as possible. Pol Pot did not segregate his victims into categories of rich or poor. Unlike Hitler, Pol Pot did not choose one ethnic or political group to attack. The Kymer Rouge, of which he was the leader, simply killed anyone they wanted to. Soldiers of the Kymer Rouge did not discriminate. They killed and tortured because they could.
