I have a 97 Honda Civic ex Vtec auto with approx. 155k on the motor and tranny. I have had no problems with it going in gear or shifting. But today when I drove approx 20 feet it slipped going into 2nd gear and approx 100 feet later there was nothing, like it was in nuetral, even when you put the shifter in park. But when I shut the car off for approx 5 minutes I can drive it another 20 feet before it does it again. It has fluid in it so that cannot be the problem. If anyone has any suggestions before I buy a tranny or part the car out that would be great.
Thanks!!!

Trannsmissions require regular mantaince just like your engine. If it is slipping and you have fluid in it, check the following things. Does the fluid on the dip stick for the tranny smell burnt? Is it dark red or black in color? If so, you have most likely burnt it up. Check your vaccumn modulator if you have one. It is on the transmission, and has a vaccum source hooked to it. The hose can be cracked, or the modulator can be shot. If you pull the vaccum hose off and fluid comes out of the modulator it is shot. It might be worth it to have it towed to a trans shop, have it drained and flushed.
Hope this helps.

It could be the transmission filter. It could be dirty. If your fluid is black or dark red your transmission is shot. it could be your transmissions module to check it also.
