Can anyone tell me the name of an old film ?

i watched the film on tv in the early hours of the morning about ten years ago. It was made in the late sixties/early seventies and was set in a town in america with a beach and pier. It was about a radio phone in show who took a call from a young woman who was threatening suicide. The DJ didn't take her seriously and cut her off but the other listeners rang in to tell him to take her seriously. The DJ regretted being so dismissive of the woman and he uses his listeners to track the girl down before she harms herself. The ending involves a beach and a pier, i'm sure and they succeed in saving her. Anyone know of the film ?

Are you thinking of "The Slender Thread"? I remember Anne Bancroft plays unhappy married woman who checks into hotel then calls the crisis center after taking pills. The guy on the other end of the phone is not supposed to take calls without supervision, but he takes it anyway and trys to help her. His supervisor gets mad at first, but helps him anyway. The suspense is centered around them finding her, and it seems she is found at the beach. Here's a link:

it does not sound like "play Misty for me" because the woman in that movie is a staler stalking Clint Eastwood. Although "Play misty for me" does involve a D.J. and the beach and even a scene where the lead character tries to kill herself, this does not sound like the plot. listeners never phone in to tell him to take her seriously. She is at his house when she tries to kill herself. She also is not saved, she is thrown off the balcony and it shows her floating in the ocean. she dies.

It is indeed "Play Misty For Me" . It was one of Clint Eastwood best non western films. If I remember correctly it was before the the Dirty Harry movies.
