If it is a close neighbor I take it to them when they get home, if it to someone that is not close to me I give it to the mailman the next day so he can deliver it to them. I would never throw away someones mail. It may be important.

If you know who it belongs to you should give it to them (I've done that before). But if you don't know them (not your neighbors) you can take it to the post office. You shouldn't throw it away in case it's important.

A mature adult would either bring it to the neighbor or give it back to the mailman and have them deliver it.
I hope the bozos who said toss it or burn it aren't expecting a large check that's been delivered to one of their own kind. That would be SUCH a shame.....
