I only ask because I was driving home sometime last week and the sun was setting directly in front of me. Starting from the horizon, the colors were yellow, then orange, then light blue. The light blue color stretched until it was directly above me and then became dark blue. Behind me the sky was almost black. Does that mean, then, that the sky is actually black and only appears light blue when the sun's rays hit it?

AHHHH !!!!A question other than why is the sky blue. The color of the sky is colorless, clear. Look at the shots of earth from space (on the night side) you can see earth perfectly, no color enhancement. Look up at the stars on a clear night, you can see them without any bluish color.

The sky is only various colors when the sun is shining thru it.

Our atmosphere is made of Oxygen,Hydrogen Carbon dioxide, and Nitrogen. Basically similar to water. This causes refractions from the rays of the Sun. Add to that pollution and the fact the Earth is round you get many prism effects that color the sky. Without the atmosphere the sky would look like the Moon's sky black except for the light from the Sun. Enjoy those sunsets and sunrises.

Sky is black. Atmosphere refracts the sunlight in a way that you perceive a lightish blue colour. Sometimes it might seem orangy or purply depending on the humidity and position of the sun

The sky gets it's color from reflections off of Earths surface but if the sky had nothing to reflect you'd just see the sun, clouds and black space.
