It's the same reason you don't like the smell of rotting meat or skunk weed. It's genetic. All organisms are programmed by their DNA to be repulsed by certain smells and attracted to others. Smells are caused by certain molecules that go into the air from the source and those chemicals are detected as "a smell". Mosquitoes are repulsed by molecules from citronella and attracted by molecules in our breath. Why does the DNA do this? Same as any other trait of any organism--over millions of years it has proven to be beneficial to the organism.

It has something to do with the citrus smell. Fleas won't stay on cat or dog if you rub their fir with an orange peel.
