You mean computer viruses, I assume - not the biological kind - or you wouldn't have asked your question here.
Computer viruses are computer programs that have the ability to replicate themselves and spread from one computer to another. As computer programs, they can do any harm that a computer program can do. (The worst is probably wiping your FLASH BIOS, which basically leaves the computer completely unusable and it will have to be taken to the factory for BIOS re-flashing.)
As self-spreading computer programs, they are able to perform this harm to a lot of computers (sometimes - many millions of computers), thus increasing the total harm.
In addition, even if the virus does not cause intentional harm, it can still be harmful. Its spreading process, if very agressive, can clog the network, use system resources, and cause general slow-downs. In addition, time and human resources will have to be spent for its removal.

Viruses in a computer are basically the same as they are in general. They break down the system and make it weaker or nonfunctionable. In a computer, a virus can break your system down by overwriting programs and or other system files. it can also search your computer for any valuable or personal information. I hope that helped. That was just the basics.

Go to www.distrowatch.com to find out how to get all the popular flavors of Linux...
