copying a file is making a duplicate copy of the same file.
copying is basically done for taking backup, transferring file from one computer to another computer or one folder to another folder etc. where as installation is done to install a particular software eg. windows xp. installation is nothing but copying the necessary files to your computer so that the application will work. but applications if it has to work some system settings has to be done. so the installation is basically a program which copies the required files and makes the necessary system changes so that the application will work.

To "copy" a file is to make a duplicate of that file.

To "install" a file, it must be an "application" file having certain extensions.
When you click the file to "install" the application, the extension tells the OS that it IS an application, and is to be run, and how to run it.

"Installation" is the process of installing the application to your computer.
