I have a feeling that maybe my hidden recovery partition may have been altered. I was told that HP recovery discs are unique to each computer so if mine has been altered, there's not much I can do. I don't know if I believe that but... I'd like to try to find a version on disc so that I can format my computer knowing it wasn't altered. HP Pavilion 754n is what I have.

You should have READ your users manual.

HP allows you to make ONE copy of the "restore" set to allow recovery from CD's. Apparently you didn't make a set yet.

HP makes MANY of any system, and they are all alike FOR THAT PARTICULAR SERIES, therefore they have a "master" set for EACH VARIATION they make. That is why they can supply you with a set.

The "Recovery" drive is usually labeled as the "D:" drive, and is a "hidden" drive on most systems, and therefore NOT accessible to the user, EXCEPT for recovery.

If the file on that partition has been altered, (and I do NOT know any way to find out EXCEPT to try it), the only remaining HP option is to contact them and buy a set for your system.

You COULD buy a windows CD, but then you would still need the Motherboard "system" disc that has all the necessary drivers for your specific motherboard, and the drivers for any "add on" boards, in order to "rebuild" the system from scratch.
These may be available from the MB manufacturer, or available as downloads if you have all the specifications for the system.

Hope this helped.

You can get one from HP (they don't charge much if I'm not mistaken). This will not be usable if you ever upgrade any of the core hardware in the system (ie motherboard).
Better idea would be to go to www.newegg.com and get a copy of XP OEM edition for $90.
XP MCE $110 or so.
XP PRO $140 or so.
With a real XP cd you can actually install it on your system after you upgrade it.
