Depends on the kid I've taken 5 year olds before. Given he is 5 here are some tips.

1. Realize he may not have the attention span to watch the whole game of whatever you are going to so have something for him to do if he gets bored or check out the stadium to see what there is to do while watching the game.

ex1. The Reds games this year had baseball bingo cards they handed out with game events ex. (3rd baseman hits a double) it helped keep my kids in the game. You could create one yourself.

ex2. Some baseball stadiums have speedgun pitching game or other activities for the kids.

2. Food. Depending on where you are going if they let you bring in any food bring something they will let you bring in (often closed water bottles and snacks can be brought in but check the stadium). Kids have a tendency to want food from every vendor so having some food on hand will keep your bill down.

3. To keep the kid in the game point out what is going on during the game. Also if possible watch some games on TV before you go so he knows some players and some key things that can happen.

4. Depending on your options if you 5 year old has a friend and dad that want to go it can make things easier for you if they have someone to entertain them if they get bored with the game.

Have fun.

I personally went to my first sporting event two months before I was born. It was the 1987 World Series but I don't remember any of it.

Seriously though, you can take your son to a sporting event any time you like. I went to many various sporting events as a child and though I do not remember what happened in the games, I remember going and I know that it was an exciting experience.

Take him now! ;) Just don't expect him to sit still the entire game. The faster the action the better, so maybe baseball is out for a while... try hockey or soccer or basketball.
He will want to explore wherever you're sitting. Plan to bring things to keep him occupied when the game gets boring... coloring book and crayons, toy cars, Legos, small bags of treats like some leftover halloween candy, raisins, box juices, a bottle of water, etc.

He'll want to get up to use the bathroom a lot, and of course, stuff himself on food from the concession stand.

Bring a small travelling pillow and a fleece lap blanket into the arena so he can crawl on the floor for a nap.

What a great way to spend time with him. .He will always remember his dad taking him special places!!

My dad took me to my first baseball game when I was 6. I had no idea what was going on but it was wonderful. Sitting with the adults, cheering, the crowd, the food. That was 51 years ago and I can still remember it, going into the old Yankee stadium. It was a double header with Boston and I think I fell asleep in the second game, however. But now is not too early.

I went to my first games at Fenway Park at age five. It was always magical walking out of the city and into a beutiful backyard where grownups can play.

I'll go with five as a good age because they will remember it.

My first child, a boy, will be born in December. We already have multjple Nationals outfilts for him and he will join the family tradition of Openinig Day in the nation's capitol.

my grandfather took me when I was still in a baby carriage. Its not just the sport its the bonding in the not just father and son but any family member to sit and enjoy a game together. I would say definately 5 is time to start.

My dad took us when we were around 3. We didn't really care about the game. We just liked being with my dad and getting hot dogs & peanuts. I really can't remember it but they have pictures and remember when stories. I just remember liking to hang with my dad cause I always thought he was cool and at the age of 33 I still do.
