i'm an 8th grader that lives in southern cali...
and i really wanna become an enviromentalist or some other job that helps the world when i grow up.
So last month i got several of my friends together and we did this thing where we ask for people to donate pennies to me and my friends so we can send them to UNICEF.
A lot of people, teachers mostly, kindly gave us a lot of pennies, but most of my peers didn't..
they taunted us and said stuff like we were going to keep the money for themselves and that it's all a scam...
i was so mad, but i couldn't do anything....
how can people be so un-caring?
do they not understand?
did i do anything wrong???

No, you didn't do anything wrong. i have a cousin who is into peers because she wants to be useful and help. But from what i hear from her stressing complaints, is sort of the same as yours. You see, for me personally and have seen many....when it comes to money...some people do not wish to 'take out from the pocket' and prefers other people to 'take out theirs'. If you ask them, they would bring 1001 excuses. As for my cousin, she even told me that when suddenly someone so hardworking and a willing candidate wants to help, others would just laze back and give the whole job to that poor candidate, as if bullying at the same time. So you didn't do anything wrong...

Give money and time and energy to WHATEVER charity you want to, whether it's a huge, worldwide one, or a local one. You are doing nothing wrong.

But you're just going to have to accept that people are who they are and just because they were being rude and unkind doesn't mean you should stop. You just have to smile at them and turn away.

I'm glad that you feel a need to give and to help people and the world etc, I hope you continue on that way. Just know that not everyone feels that same calling and try to understand that that's just life.

Become more trustworthy, create a 6000 year old lie, write a book about it, then people will trust you, as many do Priests, Ministers, Reverends, etc etc etc

and they get 10% of everyone's paycheck. sad really......

You did nothing wrong.

Fear and mistrust of charities is very, very, prevalent. every charity experiences what you experienced. It's common!

Keep with your plans!
