I think it is a lot of reasons.
1) Jealousy-lawyers make a LOT of money. When you break down an hourly wage, its crazy compared to the average person.
2) A lawyer can take a logical reason and make it illogical. eg A person commits a murder. Admits it. Then the lawyer will give all sorts of reasons to justify the murder so the person isnt penalized as severely. Or, in the case of laws, they have to assume for so many things it jumbles up the org reason for the law
3) People see lawyers as defending people that have done horrendous things. Child molesters Murders Terrorists Under law everone deserves a fair trial...but its darn hard to watch an inempt prosecuter "let" someone get away with something, or watch a defense lawyer defend the wrongful actions of someone and see them get off
4) The bad lawyers are the ones you see most often or hear about. The corrupt ones. For every good lawyer, the public remembers the 20 "bad" ones.
5) Lawyers, because of their education and wealth, exude a class system that those who dont have either, resent. Some of the lawyers seem to look down on those "without" and that furthers the resentment.
Do they deserve the reputation? As with any generalization...some do, some dont. :)

I suppose that part of it stems from the fact that sometimes lawyers expect to be paid even if they don't win the case for the client. Another part of it would have to do with criminal defense attorneys who try so hard to get their client acquitted of the charges even when the lawyer knows for a fact that their client is actually guilty (think of Dershowitz defending Von Beulow).
No, it isn't fair. They don't all deserve a bad reputation.

No they don't deserve that. but i'm sure it was a bit of joking around that Shakespeare was saying.
Most lawyers get payed to lie, defend and get off people they know are guilty. So I'd say that's where the bad reputation comes from.

I'm afraid that I am sitting on the fence. There is too much confusion and not enough concrete evidence for ANYONE to be charged. Something doesn't quite add up (OBVIOUSLY). I guess, and wonder, if time will tell.................. I cant imagine that any accusers will feel any guilt at any length. They are just pointing the finger. They will just go on to point the finger at someone else in some other trial........... The people that feel the most one way or the other are the McCanns themselves. Bless ALL those involved in each and every aspect.

Yes they do. When you have trail lawyers winning huge cases and taking most of the money leaving the victims with very little. Lawyers wanting to sue McDonalds because some fat *** is overweight.
But you do have some good ones out there.

Nah, they don't. Lawyers are commonly viewed as mean people because some have to rip apart a person's reputation in order to get to the truth. But it's their job, I don't think they deserve that reputation.

Lawyers are like mosquito's, they are blood suckers and ambulance chasers.
They charge exorbitant fees and rarely deliver an acceptable price performance ratio.
They create fear, exploit financial wherewithal, and walk away consumed with what the firm's balance sheet looks like.
They are scum.
In every instance except pro bono. Lawyers will evaluate your ability to pay for extended service instead of their ability to perform extended service on an initial quote.
Lawyers as a group should be charged with racketeering.

a lot of lawyers have this reputation because they have to lie and also because many guilty and dangerous people are released in to society because of lawyers i feel that lawyers don't deserve this because i want to be a lawyer and i plan to defend and protect the innocent so every lawyer should be judged differently

Probably because they make all of the laws in this country, enforce all of the laws and interperate them to suite their needs depending which side of an issue that they are on. Hell yes they deserve this reputation and worse.
