I'm a Computer Architect by vocation,

It's fun. But honestly, it doesn't matter which direction you go in. You'll end up in the same bucket. Infrastructure design, deployments and operations.

They will start you on the phones. If you don't lose your mind after a year, you move on to desktop work. After four years, you'll touch more desktops than you ever dreamt of, occasionally touching the servers. Then in year five or six you'll move to LAN admin, two years after that Enterprise admin. After about ten plus years you get to Architecture/Engineering and there you go.

Results may vary.

- Hours are long. 50 a week, but you only get paid for 37.5.
- People will hate you because apparently their lack of knowledge and busted piece of crap PC is busted is your fault.
- Money isn't that good anymore, used to be, but truckers are making more than we do now for sitting and driving.
- About two months of every year you will retrain.
- You will get calls while on vacation, even if your cellphone is off. I have had people drive to remote lakes to tell me "Get back to the office."

Do this for 30 years and all this glamor can be yours.

Sorry about the intent of negativity I just can't be bothered sugar coating the computer field anymore.

I think if you're chosing a career for yourself, YOU should do the research, not get other people to do it. Anyway, I think an architect is better if you're an artsy person, and a software engineer if you're a technical person. It all depends on YOU. Where money is concerned, I doubt that you could make too much money off being an architect unless you had actual talent for the area. I've heard software engineering is paying a decent amount of money though.

Typically, employers looking for computer engineers (circuit designers) with at least a master degree. As for architecture schools, some offer double majors in structure (civil) engineering and architecture, which is highly desirable. Typical B.S. in architecture requires 5 years while B.S. in computer engineering is 4 years with 2 additional years for the master.

You will have many more options available to you if you attend Rice, than if you attend Devry.
