FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker) - Kevin Harvick and Scott Riggs had their own version of a Texas tussle although neither driver factored into the outcome of Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup Dickies 500.
Tempers flared following the race when Harvick's and Riggs' team members were involved in a confrontation that knocked down Harvick's wife and injured a NASCAR official who was attempting to restore order.
The drama at Texas Motor Speedway started with three laps remaining when Riggs tried to block Harvick, who repaid the favor by knocking Riggs out of the way and into the wall to set up a green-white-checkered flag finish.
Afterwards, the two teams duked it out in the pit box. Harvick's wife, DeLana, was knocked to the ground by by Riggs' tool cart and NASCAR official John Sacco suffered a badly sprained ankle after also falling to the ground.
A member of Riggs' team shoved Harvick from behind as he and his wife were walking back to the garage area. According to witnesses, the Harvicks and Sacco were knocked to the ground in front of the crash cart, which is a large tool box on wheels that is used in the pit area.
"One of the guys on the No. 10 team came up from behind me and shoved Harvick, pushed him hard enough to knock him and DeLana in front of one of the war wagons (crash cart)," said Richard Childress Racing director of competition Mike Dillon, who was walking with the Harvicks. "A NASCAR (official) got in the way and tried to stop it. DeLana twisted her leg.
"You're going to have heated moments, but when it turns physical it turns into a different story."
A member of another NASCAR team confirmed Dillon's account of the incident. Evernham Motorsports officials, who own Riggs' Dodge Charger, would not identify the crew member.
"I was in the garage with the car, so I didn't see what happened," said Riggs' crew chief, Rodney Childers. "We're working with NASCAR right now to figure out exactly what happened out there. There are always different sides to the story, and we'll work with them to find out what the truth is."
NASCAR spokesman Mike McCarthy said officials are aware of the incident and are completing an investigation, but no further comments would be issued until that investigation is completed.
Harvick admitted afterwards that he knocked Riggs out of the way after being blocked for position.
"He was blocking all over the place, he wound up on the bottom. I got a good run on top, I got in back of him and spun him out," Harvick said. "Those guys decided to take matters in their own hands and trip my wife in front of the pit box and run her over. That was unnecessary, and I'm not happy about that."
NASCAR officials called members of both teams to the transporter to discuss the situation. Penalties and possible suspension could be issued.
At the time of the on-track incident, Riggs was running third in the race.
"I don't know what happened," said Riggs, who finished 31st. "We weren't as fast as the 20 (Tony Stewart) and the 48 (Jimmie Johnson), but we were on our way to a good finish. (Harvick) was behind us and all of a sudden we were loose and in the wall.
"It's a shame for everyone on this team. They deserved a better finish for all of their hard work."

From what I read in the first article the crew memebers that pushed Harvick from behind and made Kevin and DeLana go forward and made a NASCAR offical spain his ankle badly because he was trying to prevent DeLana from getting ran over by the tool box and also made DeLana twist her leg needs to be charged with assult and fired and fined. That is totally uncalled for. I mean you can take it up with the driver but no need to get physical or injure an innocent official or driver's wife. That crew member decided to take things into his own hands by doing that and he should pay the consquences and Kevin wasn't happy about how his wife got hurt. I wouldn't either, and can you blame him? I would file charges and penalize the team and this might show people not to do stupid stuff like that again and Scott Riggs is a talented driver but his crew member screwed up the entire teams reputation by doing that and now Everham the owner of Kasey Kahne and Elliot Sadler will get the bad publicity along with Harvick who had little to do with it. I mean he was wrong for crashing Riggs but for the crew member to do that was no necessary and their are consquences for your actions and he will learn that.

harvick needs to be suspended as does riggs. they were both wrong. park them both for the last 2 races, dock them both 100 driver and 100 owner points, and fine them both $100,000 each, their owners, $500,000 each and each crew member $50,000 each. they are both idiots for this incident. harvick is a punk anyhow. he needs to be parked for deliberately crashing someone. this crap is gonna kill someone soon. stiff penalties are needed, if nascar has the guts to do it, which they dont.
