It is used to show that a light is always on to light the way home when people are at war. If you see a house with them in the window, they probably have someone in the family that is in active duty.

It is just a fanciful trip in nostalgia. Long before street lights and highways, people wood burn a candle in the window as a guide to someone coming home.

That is a GUIDING LIGHT...
I was told that people use to place candles in the window when a loved one was away from the house. It was used to show where home was, to guide the loved ones home again.
That's what I heard anyway...

here where i live, if someone has a family member in the service they put candles in the windows to light their way home...
