Yup,

I took my Associates in Comp Sci. Then hit university for my B Comp Sci.

Unfortunately I was also running the beginning of my business at the time. So between my business that was doing well enough and university that was interrupting my business time. I dropped out.

I still ended up with a two year degree though and in university I took a few accounting courses which I still use to this day. Even with 10+ folks working with me, I still needed some training. Even now, I have about two months worth of skills updating that I do every year. Everything from tax law to Human resources to Technical skills update.

Running a business is fun, but it still requires homework, research, people skills and lots of preparation. All I can say after 18 years running a business I wish I had slowed down and enjoyed university more. The business would have still been there when I got out with the four year degree.

That's not to say it was a mistake continuing to build my business. Personally when I sell my business, I'm going back to school and taking something interesting like history this time. You know, taking something for fun.

Then again I'm now an old fart...;)

These days college is a personal choice when it comes to careers. I didn't get a degree, I only went to one semester of college. I'm just not a school person and I don't do very well in that environment. However, I've had a successful business of my own for the last 8 years. I do event planning for private parties and corporations/businesses.

The key is to find what you love doing the most, finding who you want to sell to, then keep spreading the word until you've made enough money to advertise, advertise, advertise!

When you love what you do, you'll always be more successful than a degreed person doing what they hate or find boring.

Another alternative would be to take a small business class offered by your community or local college. It's not for a degree, but it just teaches you all the things you need to know.

Good luck!

It really depends on what type of business you want to start. I took a year of college and hated it. I worked in management for 6 years and loved it, but wanted my own business. I got some help from friends, but mostly from my job experience and my common sense. After 25 years, I sold the business and started 2 more. I love working for myself. I'd rather see you get the work experience and learn from a mentor than from a book and a prof. that has never been in the business world. But, it would be helpful to take some business classes and some general accounting. Just do something that you have a passion for and you'll do fine.

Education is never a waste of time!

I finish my Master Degree in architecture / Urban Design 4 years ago and worked as an urban designer for 2 years, then I started own business - digital communication consultancy. That is very much not what I studied at uni. But still - it was worth it! And I use uni education a lot!!!

Go and study and even you study wrong subject... There much more to study then uni then subjects – it’s a learning discipline, learn to work as a team, learn to do research, find research topic, see the market…

I know so many people who got the idea for their successful business while studying!
Whatever situation you are in - you can always find something useful for your business if you re looking.

The education you recieve from college is as good as you make it, try to decide a direction and just do it. For owining your own business, Look at specializing in the field you want to own or getting the business degree for the money principles..... Then, ask yourself.... If someone gave me a million dollars today but i had to still work for the rest of my life, what would i do. AT least that will give you a direction of where you might head while going for college.

Depends on your native knowledge. The guys who started Google droped out of college. I don't think Gates ever finished. The guy who stated FedEx proposed the fedex concept when getting his MS at Harvard and got a B minus on it--the lowest grade you can get and still remain in the master program.

My wife has a BS and I have a credit shy of one year of college. We own a business, totally unrelated to her major, but don't make near as much as folks with degrees generally do in their field of study. (She decided she hated working in her field.)

Definitely go to college if you have the opportunity. Look into jobs you'd like to do or businesses you'd like to be in regardless of pay when picking your major. You'll be more driven to succeed if you're doing something you like. You'll be more likely to succeed if you get an education in it.
