Most twenty-four hour care facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, etc.) do not have enough staff. That means the staff that is there must work harder, often to the point where patient safety is compromised. Frequently, mandatory overtime is required. This can lead to exhaustion, errors, burnout, lack of job satisfaction, and loss of quality of life outside of work.
Nurses are not adequately paid for the amount of responsibility they can handle. Although they are the profession most trusted by the public, shown in many studies and surveys, they are not consistently treated with respect by other health care professionals.
That having been said, there are many devoted and dedicated nurses who cannot imagine doing anything else! Find them and treasure them...they deserve it.

most common causes of nursing shortages are burnout, stress, and too much demand during nursing school.
most people hoping to become nurses are usually only looking at the fact that it does pay well and you can find a job anywhere. they don't take into consideration the high stress involved not only with the job itself but for school also. most nursing courses now require a "c" or better in all classes taken which seems easy but it's not always (especially if you have a family and are trying to go to school). student nurses spend an average of 30 hours in school a week then have to work and maintain a family life at home as well-it's hard!!
the stresses of the job are overwhelming. on a normal hospital floor (non-icu), nurses can take up to 8 patients each and they are responsible for those patients entirely for 12 hours. they are subject to verbal abuse from patients, doctors, family members, and other nurses. they are also subject to physical abuse from confused or combative patients under the influence of medications, drugs,or alcohol.
i work in trauma icu and although the stress of the job can seem like too much-i enjoy my work and the thank you's i get from saving someone's life make it all worthwhile....

Nursing has become more high-tech and less personal than when many nurses chose the profession----------most hospitals offer only 12 hour shifts and the ratio of patients to nurse is at an unacceptable and safe level......it hurts a lot when your sincere desire is to help people by easing suffering and help to make them better when it becomes impossible to even begin to do the things the patient needs-----I'm very seriously considering changing profession (RN) also.. Hospitals are now unsafe.

Stress from hard work, dealing with people who are sick... and very often, rude and demanding. Not enough pay and no thanks. Put in a buffer position between the patient and the doctor, having to give the answer the patient doesn't want to hear...like, "I'm sorry the doctor won't refill narcotics by phone", or "the doctor will need to see you before he will treat you". Working into lunch hour and late everyday, and in our office setting, that 45 minutes a day isn't even paid... Then there are the mounds of paperwork, prior authorizations for imaging studies, for medications, referrals to specialists, etc. Not enough time in the day...to smell the roses...Burn out.

Because you aren't allowed to have a life outside the hospital and the patients don't get that you are their nurse, not their maid.

Let's sign everyone up for puke, blood, feces, disrespect, low wages, and crazy hours and see how long they last.
I'm so thankful we have caring people who stick with it. Higher wages for nurses! Let's campaign.

Stress from being over worked. Very hard job taking care of the sick and hurt and not many thanks. Long hours and double shifts at most hospitals.
