Yes, that's true. The film is loosely based on an event in Kansas where a number of dead people rose out of their graves and started feeding on the flesh of living people. It was all over the news. It lead to a global invasion of dead flesh eating zombies, eventually leading to a standoff in a mall (that failed) and people having to live underground, until a small group of survivors occupied a city, before the zombies eventually got them, too.

You mean you don't remember this?

putting that it is based on a true story is just a way to make the viewers that much more scared and to raise talk about the movie, much like how "the blair witch project" was done several years ago. The blair witch project was losely based on an urban legend along with a touch of truth on some murders that occured years ago,and then twisted into the movie that it became. everyone thought for a long time it was a real tape. It was not until after the release of the movie and the actors were interviewed that everyone finally caught on it was fake.

Well, that would be like when you watch the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre's beginning and they start off with news clippings claiming it was based on actual events. Which it wasn't, no person in Texas has ever been killed by a chainsaw and made into chili (that we know of). It's based on a true delusion of fantasy, and what an awesome fantasy it was.

No, do not listen to those other people. They are just being facitious.(sarcastic). This movie was a low budget horror movie made in the sixties by George Romero. It is now a classic. But, of course, it is not real.
