where do you put the object to sand on the disk sander

If you are talking about the stationary machine that has a sanding disk mounted in a verticle direction that spins along a horizontal axis with a table mounted near the disk at or just below center level when compared to the disk, then you will want to apply the workpiece to the side of the disk that is moving toward the table so that the friction of the sander helps you hold the work piece.

If you are talking about a random orbital sander, a handheld tool with a diameter of either 5, 6, or 8", then you securely fasten the workpiece to a bench, or if the peice if large enough that it will stay put on its own you simply position it at a comfortable height with the surface that you want to sand in a horizontal plane, then you start sanding, moving the sander in whatever direction you want, trying to hit all areas evenly. If you are using a Random orbit sander, replace the sandpaper whenever you feel tempted to start pressing down hard to make the sander work.

What you do is clamp the object down and use the sander on it using the top half of the disk keeping a tight grip on it.
Do Not use the disk sander on furniture or anything else that you do no want to have a bunch of circular scratches on! For that you would use a Belt Sander. Also the sand paper that you use is important. Fine or Coarse grit makes a huge difference.

Listen my dear, if you have to ask such a question you shouldn't be using a disc sander to sand anything. You'll probably ruin the peice you're trying to sand and may also injure yourself in the process. Sorry, but not all people should use power tools.

IT DOESNT MATTER YOU CAN SAND FROM THE TOP OF SANDER OR SIDE WHICHEVER IS MORE COMFORTABLE TO YOU TO HOLD IT WHILE SANDING.
