If you are EXCLUSIVELY breastfeeding and not having periods, breastfeeding itself is as effective as condoms for the first 6 months.
If you are looking for hormonal birth control, progestin-only contraceptives are the preferred choice for breastfeeding mothers. DO NOT take a pill containing estrogen, especially in the first 6 mos.

I am exclusively breastfeeding my 12 month old daughter. I have a mirena IUD since she was 8 weeks old. It is awesome!!!! It doesn't hurt, no period, no harmful horomones passed on, no pill or patch to take or put on. It hasn't affected my milk supply, no mood swings no complications at all. I wanted something reliable and hassle free. Visit mirena.com and read all about it. You get it put in at the dr. office and only pay your copay---mine was 25.00!!!!!!!!!! You can come home that same night and use it and it's effective then. No waiting or having to use condoms as back up. If you change your mind you go back to the dr. and have it remove that same day---and start adding to your family.... THE BEST THING---low maintenance!!!!! Have it checked 1 time a year and replaced after 5 years!!!!!!!!!! also no weight gain!!!!!!!!!!!

I started birth control 7 weeks after I had my daughter. I started on the Errin tablets. I buy the generic ones. Their $7.00 and work well....I really like them they have not changed the way I feel at all, and in no way have effected my milk supply. Any progesterone only pill will be fine and safe...you just can't take a b/c pill that has estrogen because thats what keeps you from making milk.

My OB said that the "mini pill" (progesterone-only pill) will not interfere with lactation like regular birth control pills that contain estrogen. The drawback is that have to be more careful not to miss any doses and to take the pill at the same time every day in order for it to be effective.

I used Nordettes about one week after I gave birth and I breast fed my baby. I did not have any negative effects while I was on the pill. I was on the pill for about nine years and only went of it about two months ago. I am expecting baby number two early July 2007. So you don't have to wait long to conceive again. congrats & good luck.

After 6 weeks postpartum, you're able to nicely be prescribed the mini pill this is a delivery administration pill that includes basically progesterone. this is risk-free in the time of breastfeeding and does no longer decrease your supply. So do no longer difficulty, all of us is basically being trolls :)
