They are sold usualy near the elctronics, make sure to take the batterie out of it and take it with you while your looking for it cause its a very small and weird battery, match it up with a scale if its an older version and you should get it. These happen to be around the cameras and video recorder sections in big stores.

If it is a button battery then some supermarkets sell them, like someone had mention to you about pulling out the dead battery and matching it up with the new one do that you may get the wrong type of battery. you can also check with the98cent store or if you are lucky you can also find button batteries at swapmeets for $1.00 but make you you have the old battery to compare. and another suggestion you can also go to a local watch repair shop and see if they have the button battery that you need

The jewlery counter at K-Mart changed the batteries in my VMU for me. VMUs and Tamagotchi's are pretty much the same thing.
