Before you change your monitor, try the monitor on another computer to make sure that it actually is the monitor.
The problem actually sounds to me like a video card problem. Small vertical lines can be a bad LCD screen, but if you've got columns all over the place, or a CRT instead of LCD, that could be a video board.

This could be caused by either your video card or your monitor. If you have a second PC available, try switching monitors. If the problem follows the monitor, it the monitor. If it stays with the PC, it's the video card.

Your video card may be overheating, you might want to check that out, also blowing canned air into your pc case might release some dust, increasing airflow, this reduces all over heat. if your video card has a attatched cooling fan, make sure it turns at all times.
