Depends on what you're using it for.
Just general stuff or work-related things, I would go with an IBM Thinkpad.
If it's for gaming, Dell XPS or any Alienware laptops, but that's some expensive stuff there.
If you're a doctor or lawer (work in the legal buisness) I would go with a laptop that that screen flips around and turns into a tablet (has a touch screen you can write on). This can be sueful if you're a student too for taking notes.
If you're in graphic design, iBook, Period.
If you just want a laptop as a mobile computer the Thinkpad is a good choice, but there's plenty of good quality notebooks out there that will serve you well. I personally would not get a Gateway, because laptops are infamous for having probems that cost a lot to repair, and I've heard from many people that Gateway's customer support is terrrrrrrrrible. Dell probablly has the best.

Apple is the best. For many reasons,
virus free
don't crash
don't freeze up
don't blow up (Sony!)
Easy to use
nice choice of screens
nice outer casing
Front Row Media center
built in camera
many good built in Applications
fast
Can run windows(double the gaming and games double the applications)

I know you should get a mac, it being the most powerful computer out there right now. No viruses, no spyware and Leopard is coming out soon. AND, you know how you think you spend $600 for a Windows, IBM or Toshiba laptop but then when the viruse hit, you are going to pay a lot to get the computer replaced, you may loose the memory and it can take many weeks.

American brands first, best bargain price with same quality. HP/Compaq or Dell are reliable, ease to use with popular software. Mac is also more suitable for photo, movie or graphic works. Good luck.

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market, the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online. these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half. one such website for laptop computers is :
