they came from central asia across the land bridge from russia to alaska, and then migrated further south.
recently, two men walked from alaska to russia, so it can still be done to this day:
Alaska-to-Russia Walk Gets 2 Men Arrested
Chicago Sun-Times, Apr 5, 2006
"MOSCOW -- Russian authorities have detained a Briton and an American after the pair made a rare crossing by foot of a frozen 56- mile stretch of the Bering Strait, officials said Tuesday. The two were arrested for not registering with authorities.
Briton Karl Bushby said on his Web site (goliath.mail2web.com) that he and Dimitry Kieffer of Alaska took 15 days to walk from Alaska to Russia. Bushby began his walk in 1998 in South America."

The native American might have come to north America during the last ice. The theory is that water levels were lower and hunting parties were able to cross over land from Russia to Alaska. The native Americans then migrated south. This migration is believed to have happened about 10 000 to 12000 years ago.
There are other theories but this one seems to be the most common.

Until recently it was thought that they walked from Siberia to Alaska via the "land bridge" that existed ten to twelve thousand years ago, when there was more ice and less water in the ocean (global warming has been going on for at least that long);and that they kept walking south.
More recently, evidence has been found that people came by boat south from Alaska, which was much faster than walking. Some may have walked all the way also, but the boaters got there faster.

My history tells me we've been here since time began (story of turtle island), but for those of you who want a rational answer apparently we all came from africa (story of evolution).
The issue with that land bridge is that it is being used to discount Natives as the original inhabitants of North America, by attributing our existence to being some how east European or Asia, therefore confirming we are of mogoloid decent and not a separate race to our own.
The Bering strait or Alaskan land bridge can be disproved by archaeological finds that predate the land bridge theory.(check on first link)

I believe they were already in North America before they were discovered. It is so sad that they were driven as far as Canada during the war. They now live in certain parts of the US on RESERVATIONS....

The current accepted theory is they came from Asia and Siberia. However, there is some indication that a small population may have arrived from Africa.
