When i received it I tried to download updates from microsoft but was prompted to install the validation tool instead. The result was that microsoft has blocked the registration key due to the fact that it has been used more than once already... money paid etc... It's illegal isn't it? What can I do?

Purchased from a shop online that is found with many search engines that has an address and email but no phone number...

If the seller is a legitimate business, then you may get somewhere by calling or e-mailing their customer service department. If you bought the computer from an individual, try dealing with that individual. You may not get very far in either case.

Microsoft has a program called the "genuine Windows offer" whereby you can make your copy of Windows XP legitimate. It may be free, or it may cost $149 for XP Pro, depending upon your circumstances. You will be required to supply Microsoft with the counterfeit Windows XP CD. If you did not receive a CD, and Windows XP was pre-installed, then you will be required to fill out what Microsoft calls "a counterfeit report regarding a fraudulent transaction" to qualify.

Read through the various questions and answers at the following web site: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#Question5Label .

Good luck.

you didnt mention whether you bought the xp os separately or it came along with the laptop. In that case the seller may have given you with the pirated edition. Even though you provide with another key it will it is not valid only.

If you want to get all the updates and want a legal edition better buy a genuine windows xp from a genuine seller because there are many pirated editions

I'm afraid, Sue, you're on a hiding to nothing here. You could try doing what's already been suggested and contacting Micro$oft, but all they'll be bothered about is that it's an illicit copy of one of their products.

One thing you might consider doing is reporting the person who you purchased the computer from. (Presumably, you have contact details.) This won't get your money back or get you a legitimate copy of Windows, but I'm sure it'll make you feel better. I know it would me.

Don't contact microsoft, if you are going to (again) don't mention (copy) try to start up again in safe mode f5 or f8 and use the recovery disc. If you did this first without contacting Microsoft first things might be better. Good luck! Think! Misplaced or lost recovery disc?, tread carefully when dealing with Microsoft and other big corporates.
