he would just be exploited and they would have him caged up so they could discover his weakness

Why did Superman never make any money? That's an easy one:

1) If he went around the world finding unmined gold and gems, he could've destroyed the world's economy.

2) If he stole money, then he wouldn't have been much of a hero.

3) Making too much money and spending it as his alter ego, Clark Kent, would have drawn too much attention to Clark - after all, how many reporters do you know with mansions?

4)A true HERO does not look for the money in a rescue - it's the job itself that is payment enough, knowing that at the end of the day you did everything you could to make the world a bit better for everyone else.
