Neuroscientists study the brain, and the brain is arguably the most important organ in the human body (most people would be willing to have an organ transplant for any organ, except the brain). Thus any progress understanding the brain and how to cure diseases that affect the brain are of great importance. Also, for better or worse, any information we discover that would help us to change anti-social/criminal behavior will probably become a major source of debate and will have a huge impact on future society. And finally, insights into brain functioning could lead to more effective forms of artificial intelligence. Whatever country gets ahead in the "brain race" will probably become the next world economic power, so once again neuroscience would have to be listed among the most important areas of research. (This would be true whether you LIKE the potentials for brain/intelligence related technology or not. The simple fact is that it will have an unimaginable impact on humanity's future.)

The bottom line is that it has great potential to solve major personal and social problems, but like anything that is powerful, it will probably create nightmares as well.

One of the key researches in neuroscience is cognition. The ability to connect seemingly random bits of information into a cohesive whole. The better we are able to do this, the better we become at problem solving.
